Quick Start B is an accelerated piano method for older beginning and continuing students working at Mid Elementary to Late Elementary (approximately Grade 1) level. It reorganises and adapts the material from Supersonics Piano Method Level 3 into a faster, more clearly articulated learning pathway suited to teens, adults, and students who progress quickly.
The book is organised into distinct musical sections rather than a single linear sequence. This modular structure allows teachers and students to work through the book sequentially or to select sections according to individual interests, goals, and pacing, while still covering the full scope of Late Elementary material.
Key Explorations — tonal awareness and fluency
Students explore the keys of C major, A minor, F major, D minor, G major, E minor, and D major, alongside the chromatic scale. These studies support practical key awareness and reading fluency through repertoire-based learning rather than isolated drills.
Arrangements — structure and stylistic awareness
This section includes accessible arrangements of folk tunes and well-known melodies. The focus is on recognising musical structure, phrasing, and stylistic characteristics while keeping technical demands deliberately manageable.
Modes — expanding harmonic vocabulary
Students explore commonly encountered modes, including Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, and Locrian. These pieces introduce modal sounds in a practical way, helping students recognise and apply these colours within real musical contexts.
Historical Sounds — listening and musical character
Authentic historical repertoire is presented at a lighter technical level, allowing students to focus on unfamiliar sounds, styles, and musical language without added physical difficulty.
Chords and harmony — contemporary playing
Chord-based playing and contemporary harmonic language continue to be developed throughout the book. Students apply harmony in practical contexts, strengthening coordination, balance, and expressive control.
Creative exercises — application and exploration
Creative work is integrated across the level, drawing on pentatonic material, modes, jazz sounds, and scale patterns. These exercises encourage experimentation, reinforce understanding, and support independent musical thinking.
Across its 140 pages, Quick Start B develops reading fluency, technical control, pedalling, stylistic awareness, and musical expression through playing. The book is designed for sustained use over approximately 1–2 years, with every section contributing directly to long-term musical development.
