Sonny Chua’s music is characterised by its playful exploration of styles and musical techniques. It strives for the beauty of simplicity and brevity, speaking in an accessible and lively language. Many of Sonny’s piano pieces were written as educational works for his students, with a particular focus on developing performance technique through musical creativity.

Born in Malaysia and educated in Melbourne, Sonny was a highly respected composer, pianist, and educator. He taught for many years at prestigious schools including Scotch College and the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School, where he inspired generations of young musicians. His works often blend classical structure with jazz harmonies, rhythmic vitality, and humour — qualities that make his music both enjoyable to play and musically enriching.

We have begun organising, editing, and uploading all of Sonny’s piano works — a process that will continue throughout 2025 and into 2026.
