Keys to the Kingdom 1 invites students on thrilling musical quests through imaginative worlds of sound, exploring minor, Lydian, Hungarian minor, Phrygian and bass-clef-only reading. This print book combines five quests — Runestone Keep, Fairy Doors, Goblin’s Gate, Sorcerer’s Key and Begin the Descent — into one epic volume.
Each quest uses the familiar five-note set C–D–E–F–G as a creative foundation. While this hand shape has sometimes fallen out of fashion, these pieces show just how expressive and imaginative it can be when crafted intentionally. Through intelligent articulation, varied texture, and rhythmic vitality, students never feel confined to a static “C position” — instead, they experience freedom, movement and lightness of touch within that framework.

Runestone Keep
Step inside the mysterious halls of “Runestone Keep” — a darkly imaginative opening to your Keys to the Kingdom adventure. These Late Beginner to Early Elementary pieces are designed to be learned quickly yet sound bold and dramatic, making them ideal for confident quick studies and exciting concert performances.
Each piece uses strong, repeating patterns to help you master musical concepts efficiently. Across this quest, you’ll be introduced to minor (C–D–Eb–F–G), Hungarian minor (C–D–Eb–F♯–G), and Lydian (C–D–E–F♯–G) sounds and experiment with dotted rhythms, D.C. al Fine form, and simple sustain-pedal use (held through the entire piece). You’ll also play across different registers of the piano — from deep, rumbling bass to bright, shimmering treble — developing expressive control and dynamic variety.

Fairy Doors

Across this quest, you’ll explore the bright, floating colours of the Lydian mode (C–D–E–F♯–G) while experimenting with a wide range of articulations and tempos. You’ll encounter time signatures in 3/4, 4/4 and 5/4, and use D.C. al Fine to shape musical form. The sustain pedal is used simply (held for each piece) to create a continuous glow that lets every note shimmer and blend.

Goblin’s Gate

Prepare to journey deep below the surface with “Begin the Descent”. These Late Beginner to Early Elementary studies are built for swift progress, helping you to rapily master the art of bass clef reading. Both hands read entirely in the bass clef, giving you the chance to explore the full depth and power of the lower piano registers.
Across this dramatic quest, you’ll experience the rich colours of C minor (C–D–Eb–F–G) and C Hungarian minor (C–D–Eb–F♯–G), moving through 3/4 and 4/4 time signatures with varied articulations and expressive contrasts. You’ll also work with D.C. al Fine form and encounter special surprises — such as rhythmic clapping in “Phantom Descent” and the vivid, Grieg-inspired energy of “The King Under the Mountain”.
