David Urquhart-Jones reached both performers and listeners with music that was accessible, exhilarating, and reflective of contemporary musical pluralism. With extensive experience as a pianist, orchestral player, conductor, and teacher, he was deeply grounded in the classical field yet also a skilled jazz pianist. As a full-time composer, David drew inspiration from Bach, Mozart, Stravinsky, Milhaud, and others, creating works that fused classical and jazz styles. His compositions often included precisely notated improvisational episodes with optional chord symbols for true improvisation, crafted for professional classical musicians who also enjoyed jazz. David also composed serious “straight” works, including pieces for piano, small ensembles, and orchestra, as well as works for young musicians.
